Voice Onset Time in Code-Switched Speech

What can tiny timing differences in speech sounds reveal about who we are? This project investigates how Cantonese-English bilinguals pronounce English consonants—specifically focusing on voice onset time (VOT), the time between when a consonant is released and the vocal cords start vibrating. By analyzing how VOT changes when bilinguals switch between Cantonese and English in conversation, the study explores how language experience and cultural identity influence the way we speak.
