Welcome to the BISON Lab!

At the Bilingualism, Sociolinguistics, and Cognition (BISON) Lab, we investigate bilingual phenomena, such as how individuals switch between languages in conversations in real-world, through an integrated psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic perspective. We ask questions like: How do sociocultural contexts and other social factors influence language use and processing? More broadly, how do language processing, cognitive mechanisms, and social dynamics interact? We employ different methods, including neuroimaging and behavioral experiments, naturalistic data collection, and computational modeling. We are currently based in the Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Prior to July 2025, we were housed in the Department of Linguistics at Stanford University.
